MEGA: Running a good goalie clinic

Running a good clinic

  1. Arrive to rink 30 min beforehand
    1. This way you can meet with staff and talk with parents
  2. Lead instructor brings pucks
    1. Have helmet for association work
      1. Not needed for a MEGA weekly clinic
    2. MEGA Attire required
      1. Have a spare set in case someone forgets theirs
    3. Gloves, Stick, Skates
  3. Communicate with staff on types of drills you’d like to run
    1. Text a day in advance about what you are working on
      1. Send videos
    2. Use drill database
      1. Use a lesson plan
  4. Run 20 min of group/individual movement
    1. If association clinic, run group movement
    2. If weekly clinic, communicate with staff on if you’d rather run movement together or separate based on goalies age levels
      1. Correlate movements/skating with the theme for the session
    3. Make sure to communicate with goalies on things to work on or they are doing well during this time
      1. Demonstrate proper form
      2. iPad visual aid
      3. Communicate with whole group
      4. SPEAK LOUD!
    4. Make sure other coaches are staying involved by communicating with goalies on details
      1. DON’T let them just stand and watch
  5. After movement, break up into groups for station drills (30-40min)
    1. 3-4 goalies/station depending on # of coaches and goalies
    2. 2-4 stations
      1. Each station is doing a different drill based on the theme we are focusing on
      2. Carousel Reps for groups of 3 or more goalies
        1. 1 rep then next goalie hops in
          1. Keeps the energy level up and goalies moving
      3. Use iPad
        1. Helps demonstrate things they are doing well or need to work on vs. demonstrating/explaining yourself
        2. Kids are visual learners
      4. Work through reps 1st then teach
        1. Run through a few reps to see some things the goalies need to work on
        2. Bring the goalies in and explain what they did well and what needs to be worked on
          1. Use iPad if needed to show
        3. Repeat the same drill after explaining things to help improve their skill during the drill
      5. Each station should be about 8-10min
        1. Time management is crucial
        2. Lead instructor should announce when they have 2min left for the station
        3. Try not to over talk during the station
          1. Getting the reps is crucial
      6. Lead instructor announces when goalies are rotating stations and communicate in which direction they are going
        1. Be LOUD
  6. If there is remaining time left, do a game with the goalies
    1. Ex. Shootout, goalie scrimmage, king of the net, etc.
  7. At the end of the session, have goalies help get pucks picked up
  8. Once all pucks are picked up, bring goalies in to chat about the session
    1. Each coach should have some input on the drills they worked on
    2. Ask goalies questions to help them learn
      1. Don’t just talk (They will tune you out)
    3. Have 2-3 goalies talk about what they learned or got better at
    4. Last, bring goalies in and do WOOOOOO GOALIES!
  9. Give feedback on GEM’s to the goalies in attendance
